Embedding referral details into a high-traffic page led to a 7.11% increase in revenue and engagement

Context

Businesses are always looking at ways to increase sales, and word of mouth is one of the easiest and proven ways of acquiring more customers. ReferralCandy, a B2B app available on Shopify and Woocommerce, makes this easy.

You can sign up and launch a referral program (i.e. give $10, get $10) in under 30 mins. It’s set-and-forget nature and ready-to-use assets make it a top choice among marketers.

Problem

After checkout, customers couldn’t get their referral link on the store’s website. The only other page they frequently visited—their account page—didn’t include referral details. The only solution was visiting a separate site and logging in.

This extra effort increased friction, made referrals less likely, and resulted in missed opportunities for the business.

Solution

In Dec 2024, Shopify announced their new Customer Account Extensions feature and we saw an opportunity to increase referral revenue and address the problems above.

  • We introduced a one-click extension which let merchants embed referral links in their customers account page.

  • Now when customers checked on orders, they were also nudged to refer friends to earn rewards.

  • We considered all the use cases

    After pinpointing the problem, the goal was clear: allow customers to easily access their referral link in their account.

    However, we also thought about what customers would normally expect in a referral account page.

    By allowing customers to also view past rewards and modify referral details, the extension covered all their needs.

  • Setup was easy as one click

    Setup was kept as simple as possible: add the extension > add a new page to the navigation menu.

    Further customization was optional and allowed Shopify merchants to tailor the extension to their needs.

  • Translation provided for global merchants

    For non-English Shopify merchants, we automatically translated the extension based on their store language. This sped up implementation so that they could focus on other critical tasks.

Impact

The new extension resulted in a 7.11% conversion rate and a direct increase in referral sales.

Furthermore, prospective leads gave direct and positive feedback on it during sales calls.
